Wierschem - Burg Eltz

Eltz Castle is a castle in Germany, located in the town of Wierschem. The castle was built in a strategic location, on a road connecting the Moselle River with the Eifel region. In 1268, a family dispute occurred within the count's family that occupied the castle, resulting in the castle being split in two. During the Eltz Feud, the Count of Eltz opposed the policies of the Archbishop of Trier, Baldwin of Luxembourg. During this conflict, the castle was besieged by the archbishop's party, and during this siege, a castle, Burg Trutzeltz, was built to besiege Eltz. The Eltz family surrendered in 1336, and they were subsequently forced to demolish the castle's defenses, reducing it to a residential complex.
